SAFE-T

Sleep and Adjustment in Foster Environments for Toddlers and Preschoolers (SAFE-T) is built upon the same principles and strategies as SAFE, but is designed for caregivers of 2- to 5-year old children currently or formerly in foster care. The 3-session SAFE-T intervention is delivered via telehealth to caregivers alone at a time that is convenient.

The efficacy of SAFE-T was recently tested in a randomized controlled trial among foster and adoptive foster caregivers in Texas. Caregivers were randomly assigned to receive the SAFE-T intervention or given an informational booklet about healthy sleep in young children to keep (Sleep Education Support; SES group).

Results based on the first 45 families to participate indicate that SAFE-T, but not SES, is effective not only in improving children’s sleep but positively impacts children’s daytime behavior and parenting stress.  These positive results were maintained three months after treatment.

Child Nighttime Sleep

Children who received SAFE-T showed a significant increase in their nighttime sleep by an average of 60 minutes per night. Maintained 3 months later. Based on medium effect size.

Child Sleep Problems

Children who received SAFE-T showed a significantly greater decrease in parent-reported sleep problems compared to the control group based on large effect size.

Child Daytime Behavior Problems

Child Daytime Behavior Problems

Children who received SAFE-T showed a significant decrease in daytime behavior problems whereas behavior problems increased in the control group. Based on medium effect size.
