Dr. Candice Alfano is Professor of Psychology, a licensed clinical psychologist, and Director of the Sleep and Anxiety Center of Houston (SACH) at the University of Houston. For over 17 years, Dr. Alfano’s clinical research program has studied the ways in which children’s sleep impacts their emotional and behavioral health across the life course. She has published more than 150 scientific papers, chapters, and books on these topics. After becoming a foster parent in 2017, Dr. Alfano’s research program and clinical practice have been dedicated to identifying, understanding, and addressing sleep health disparities among children placed in foster care and other alternative care settings. Her research has documented the presence of pervasive and impairing sleep problems in this population of youth as well as a general lack of available sleep-based education, training, and services for both child welfare professional and families. With funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the University of Houston, Dr. Alfano is working with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) to test the efficacy and implementation of Sleep and Adjustment in Foster Environments (SAFE), the first trauma-informed behavioral sleep intervention for foster caregivers and the children they care for. In addition to her research and clinical work, Dr. Alfano regularly dedicates her time to giving talks, conducting workshops, providing clinical consultations, and advocacy work in order to educate various stakeholders about the critical role of healthy sleep for all children, but children with a history of adversity and trauma especially.
